On Friday's 'Real Time,' Bill Maher Got Into Holiday Spirit At Trump's Expense

The holidays are right around the corner, and the tube is about to be chock full of Christmas-themed programming before you know it. Some folks are even getting a jump on things by dipping their toes in the holiday waters a little early. Unfortunately, one of the first dips had to revolve around politics, and that gives rise to fears that even Santa Claus will be weighing in on the endless political yammering that controls the airwaves these days.

As the Huffington Post shares, Friday’s episode of HBO’s ‘Real Time’ placed an amusing spin on an old classic - at the expense of President Donald Trump, of course. Host Bill Maher would devote a segment of his show to reimagine how things could be different in Trump’s world these days - a la ‘A Christmas Carol,’ the classic Charles Dickens tale that revolves around Ebeneezer Scrooge receiving a wake-up call in the form of three ghosts on Christmas Eve. You shouldn’t have to guess who was assuming the role of Scrooge in Maher’s take on things.

“Since Donald Trump is truly the Ebenezer Scrooge of our time ― angry, rich, and hard to look at ― maybe tonight I could play the part of the ghost and show Trump an alternative reality of what his life could have been if he weren’t such a s***-head,” Maher said.

Maher would proceed to play out some old clips of Trump interviews. In one of the clips, Trump claimed that he wasn’t interested in making “tremendous amounts of money.” He would also note that he prioritized love over work, that he believed in love, and that he wanted to enjoy his life. As Maher sees it, perhaps Trump changed after “spending the last 20 years watching Fox News.”

“Is it too late to bring back the old Trump?” he asked.

It was certainly an amusing take on things, but a gander in the mirror by Maher may reveal that the pot has called the kettle black during this skit. Since Trump entered the political arena, Maher has spent an inordinate amount of time skewering him. He’s far from the only talk show host to have done that, but he speaks without a filter due to the platform he works on. As such, there are numerous times in which he or a panelist seriously crossed the line of good taste while providing an opinion about Trump.

We get it. Trump attracts attention, and people want to talk about him. However, is it really too much to ask for the chatter to be toned down just a little bit? The election is over and in the books, the sky remains firmly in place, and there’s no big bad wolf that’s out of sight. The constant bickering is seriously out of hand, and it’s creating an environment that’s downright toxic.

Perhaps for this holiday season, we can put toning things down at the top of our lists. If enough folks do that, perhaps the environment will return to something resembling normal for the New Year.
