Fox News Commentator Lashes Out At 'Joyless' Democrats

“Liberals take the fun out of everything,” a Fox News contributor declared this week.

According to Rachel Campos-Duffy, Democrats spoil all sorts of activities and events. As examples, the conservative commentator cited “scouting, Halloween, Christmas (and) football.” She criticized officials at an elementary school in Massachusetts who called off their scheduled Halloween parade due to concerns that the event was not “inclusive” for all of the children. Boyden Elementary School plans to hold a “Black and Orange Spirit Day” rather than the parade. Halloween costumes will be banned.

Campos-Duffy pointed out that any parents who oppose Halloween traditions could just not allow their children to take part in the parade. She argued that the school should not deny other kids the opportunity to celebrate, adding: “I don’t think liberals are going to be happy until they tear down every institution, tradition and fun in our country. It would be a sad, joyless world if they ran it.”

CBS Boston reported that a parent of one of the students spoke out against the decision. “Put a costume on. Parade down the street. Let them have their little time,” he said. “Why do you have to turn it into something political?” The grandmother of other children at the school told the news station that “the Halloween party should happen on Friday ‘cause all the kids are excited.” Another parent remarked: “I think it’s a lot of political correctness. I think it’s a shame because Halloween is the funnest day of the year, next to Christmas, for children.”

The school’s principal explained in a letter to parents that “the costume parade is out of our ordinary routine and can be difficult for many students.” He continued: “The parade is not inclusive of all the students, and it is our goal each and every day to ensure all students’ individual differences are respected.”

CBS Boston noted that another Massachusetts school took similar action last month. Needham Mitchell Elementary School authorities announced they were canceling their costume parade, as well as Halloween parties. Teachers reportedly complained to the principal that they were not comfortable with the activities because some parents refused to let their children participate.

Other parents expressed the opposite view. “It’s fun! I can’t see why people want to preclude kids from having fun, and enjoy something that’s more cultural,” Jon Cohan said. “There’s no real religious significance to anything about Halloween. It’s just a thing where kids get candy.” Matthew Roy told a reporter: “I don’t feel it’s really related to overall learning. It’s important for kids to have fun, but it is a choice, per family. We definitely like to celebrate with our kids.”

The Needham school’s principal sent a note to the parents. “I recognize that this decision will be disappointing to some who may feel like Mitchell is changing,” he wrote. “I would agree that this represents a change, but I believe that in the long term any change towards including all children is a positive change that will benefit our students and our community.” Instead of the parade and parties, the school will hold “William Mitchell Day” on Nov. 9.
