Former Trump Campaign Official: Comey Should Be Prosecuted For Leaking Those Memos

Former FBI Director James Comey is part of the “deep state in Washington that is everything that is wrong,” one-time Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski alleged Friday.

According to Newsmax, the former aide demanded criminal charges against Comey for leaking memos about his conversations with Trump to the news media. “He was the director of the FBI when these notes were taken and he’s turned them over to a law professor to ensure The New York Times got that information,” Lewandowski told ABC News. “If that’s what he has done, if he continues to do this, if this is his pattern as the FBI director, he absolutely should have been fired. And if he is the chronic leaker, he should be potentially prosecuted for leaking the information.”

Comey, during his testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, admitted he gave unclassified memos to a professor at Columbia Law School. He asked the man, whom he described as a “friend,” to pass the notes to a reporter. Comey said he hoped the revelations would help spark the appointment of a Justice Department special counsel to investigate possible collusion between Trump associates and Russia to meddle in last year’s election. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recently appointed Robert Mueller, another former FBI chief, as special counsel.

ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked Lewandowski whether there are any audio tapes of White House conversations, which Trump implied on May 12 when he tweeted: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Lewandowski told Stephanopoulos: “I don’t work for the White House.” Lewandowski said, “I worked for the campaign. I have no formal role in the building. … I don’t know if there are tapes. What we know for sure, what Jim Comey said (Thursday) the president has never been under investigation.” He was referring to Comey having confirmed Trump’s claim that the president was not a target of the FBI probe.

Lewandowski mocked Comey for saying he was “stunned” when Trump allegedly demanded his “loyalty” and asked him to stop the FBI’s investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. “What I don’t believe is Jim Comey, who is the director of the FBI for the last five years, says, ‘I was so afraid because the president asked me to do something, I didn’t know what to do,’” Lewandowski remarked. “He was so shell-shocked, ‘stunned,’ if you will, that the president said he hoped Comey would ‘let it go’ when it comes to (Flynn). Nobody has ever been tried or convicted of hoping for something.”

According to Lewandowski, Comey should have taken action if he “thought there was a law broken.” The ex-aide claimed, “he had an obligation, not only an obligation, a duty to report that to either the White House counsel, the attorney general or the associated attorney general of the United States.” Lewandowski continued: “He did none of those things, and if he doesn’t do that and knowingly conceals information of a crime, that is a felony punishable by three years in jail.”
