Former Secretary of State Calls Trump a ‘National Disgrace’

Donald Trump is a “national disgrace” and “international pariah,” according to President George W. Bush’s secretary of state.

Colin Powell blasted the Republican presidential nominee in several emails, BuzzFeed reported. On June 17, he told one of his former aides, reporter Emily Miller, that Trump was “in the process of destroying himself.” He added: “No need for Dems to attack him. (House Speaker) Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.”

In an Aug. 21 email, Powell ripped the real-estate tycoon for having falsely claimed that President Obama was born in Kenya. “Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,” the former State Department chief wrote to Miller. “That’s what the 99 percent believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up, he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim. As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans every day.”

On July 21, 2015, Powell accused Trump of having “no sense of shame” when he made public the private cellphone number of South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who was competing for the GOP nomination. Powell called the former reality-show host’s White House bid a “celebrification of society.”

When BuzzFeed News asked Powell to confirm that he wrote the emails, he said he was “not denying it” but had “no further comment.”
