Feinstein: New Information Shows Need To Investigate Loretta Lynch’s Role In Election

Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch may have improperly helped Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race, a leading Democratic senator suggested Sunday.

Newsmax reported that CNN host Brianna Keilar asked Rep. Dianne Feinstein about James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last Thursday. The former FBI director, whom Trump fired last month, told the lawmakers that he had felt “queasy” about Lynch’s actions. “I would have a queasy feeling, too, though, to be candid with you,” Feinstein said. “I think we need to know more about that, and there’s only one way to know about it, and that’s to have the Judiciary Committee take a look at that.”

Lynch came under fire for meeting briefly with Bill Clinton at an airport during the campaign. Many Republicans suggested that the former president may have been urging Lynch to not pursue criminal charges against his wife for her email practices as secretary of state. Lynch and Bill Clinton denied there was anything inappropriate about their conversation, which they claimed was not a planned encounter.

Feinstein changed the subject to focus on the Intelligence Committee’s probe of whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to interfere in the election. “This is a separate investigation we’re talking about, and I don’t think we should mix the two,” she said. “Right now, this is the total integrity of the President of the United States. This is a very big deal, Brianna. It should be all hands on deck, and everybody should welcome a second committee getting involved, particularly on the technical legal aspects of obstruction of justice.”

Some legal experts contend that if Comey’s testimony was truthful, it indicated Trump obstructed justice by asking the former FBI director to drop the agency’s investigation of Michael Flynn, the national security adviser who was forced to step down in February. In December, Flynn spoke several times with Russia’s ambassador to the United States. They reportedly discussed the sanctions that the Obama administration imposed on Russia as punishment for meddling in the election. Flynn also has been accused of accepting payments from the governments of Russia and Turkey.

Sen. Feinstein is a member of the Senate intelligence and judiciary committees, both of which are looking into the Trump-Russia scandal. She agreed that the nature of Comey’s conversations with the president is the key to whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice, a crime that could lead to impeachment proceedings. Because the president asked everyone else to leave the room so he could speak privately with Comey, there were no witnesses.

The ex-director wrote memos about the talks, which he claims are accurate accounts, though Trump insists he never asked anyone to stop the FBI probe. The president suggested there may be audio recordings of the conversations, but White House officials have not confirmed or denied the existence of such tapes. “If there are tapes, please — and the president’s equivocal on this — bring those tapes forward,” Feinstein said.

Trump initially explained that he fired Comey because of the way the FBI conducted the Clinton probe. He later admitted the Russian investigation was the real reason, which his critics say was another case of obstructing justice.
