Federal Judge Wants To Order Trump To Double The Allotted Amount Of Refugees Coming Into To US

President Trump’s attempt to halt refugee resettlement in the United States may face another hurdle, if a federal judge requires immigration authorities to double the number of refugees they allow into the country to 100,000 annually.

Breitbart News blasted the anticipated action by a U.S. District Court judge in Maryland. “Any demand by the judge that the federal government airbus an extra 50,000 migrants — including many adherents of Islam’s sharia legal system — into American neighborhoods would be an unusual intervention into government roles normally left to the elected president and Congress,” the far-right website declared in an op-ed. Breitbart claimed that each of the additional refugees would cost state and local taxpayers about $1,600 per year, with the expenses continuing “for decades.”

Other federal judges have blocked two executive orders by Trump that would have temporarily stopped the resettlement program, to give officials time to develop a better vetting process for all immigrants. According to the courts, the bans violated the Constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom because they temporarily barred travelers from certain Muslim-majority countries.

The first executive order, which the president signed Jan. 27, called for turning away new arrivals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and Libya. The second order, issued last week, omitted Iraq because the country has assured the United States it will screen anyone seeking to move abroad.

According to Breitbart News, the 100,000 number was part of a proposal by the International Refugee Assistance Protect. The Obama administration announced shortly before leaving office that it had set a similar goal. However, Trump has made it clear since his presidential campaign that he does not support the resettlement efforts, particularly those involving Syrians fleeing their war-torn homeland.

Trump made immigration reform a key component of his White House bid. In the speech announcing his candidacy in 2015, the real-estate mogul called Mexicans “killers” and “rapists.” He later advocated a temporary ban on all Muslims, as well as the surveillance of U.S. mosques.
