FBI Probe Prompts George Takei To Take Action Against Trump

Activist and former Star Trek star George Takei has been a critic of Donald Trump since the election. The 79-year-old says that it's not enough to just impeach Trump if an investigation proves he colluded with Russia to steal the election. Takei is calling for the entire Republican party to be dumped, and the White House to be handed to Hillary Clinton.

"If Trump colluded with Russia, then his election and each and every action and appointment he has made must be declared null and void," Takei began a series of tweets in which he argued that Hillary Clinton should automatically be installed as president.

"If an Olympian is found to have cheated, the gold medal is stripped away and given to the next contender. If a thief is caught he must disgorge all his ill-gotten gains. He isn't allowed to keep the spoils," Takei went on. "The concerted actions of Russia, in collusion with Wikileaks and in all likelihood the Trump campaign, cost the Democrats big. Impeachment is an insufficient remedy because Pence and the GOP should not be permitted to gain office through anyone's treason."

Here's the problem with Takei's dream of seeing Clinton president: it's not that easy.

Odds are always against a president being impeached. Even if Trump were impeached, it's no guarantee he would be removed from office. Remember, the Republicans control the House of Representatives right now, and they are unlikely to vote to oust Trump.

Even if Trump were removed from office, the 'next contender' isn't Hillary Clinton; It's Vice President Mike Pence.

If somehow an investigation proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trump and Pence both colluded, the entire Republican party could not be held accountable for those claims-- anymore than the DNC/Clinton email scandal would have meant Democrats forfeited their party's right to run. There is simply no way any investigation is going to prove every conservative politician in Washington was part of a Trump-Russia conspiracy.

The line of presidential succession is long, and Clinton is simply not in it. The very first person who could not be proven to have ties to Russia would be made president. Secretaries of Education Betsy DeVos would be in line for president before Hillary Clinton.

While Takei would like to 'clean house' of all Republicans, again, it just doesn't work that way. Trump may have appointed people to positions, but those individuals were confirmed by the Senate, and can't be ousted just because the person who appointed them was found to have engaged in illegal activity.

This is a ghost that Democrats would do best to just give up—democracy just doesn’t work that way.
