Families Of Slain Soldiers Have Not Heard From Trump

President Trump is lying about having placed phone calls to the family members of all U.S. military personnel killed in action, according to some of the relatives.

“I think I’ve called every family of someone who’s died,” Trump declared recently. However, the Daily Mail reported that four of the families announced Wednesday they had not heard from the president.

The father of Sgt. Roshain E. Brooks, who lost his life in Iraq in August, is among those waiting for Trump to offer his condolences. In an interview with The Washington Post, Euvince Brooks said he was angry at the president for falsely claiming he has reached out to all the families. Brooks told the newspaper: “I said to my daughter, ‘Can you teach me to tweet, so I can tweet at the president and tell him he’s a liar?’ You know when you hear people lying, and you want to fight? That’s the way I feel last night. He’s a damn liar.”

Another family criticizing the president is grieving the death of Army Spec. Etienne Murphy, who died in May when his vehicle overturned in Syria. The army posthumously presented its Commendation Medal to the 22-year-old infantryman from Georgia. Murphy’s mother, Sheila Murphy, told The Associated Press that because her son’s death did not happen in combat, “I feel like maybe he thought it was an accident, (but) it doesn’t matter.”

An army casualty officer promised Murphy that Trump would send her a letter. When she got tired of waiting for mail from the White House, she decided to write to the president. “It wasn’t a mean letter,” she said. “I was telling him I know he’s a grandfather. I told him I’m trying to be here for my grandkids, but some days I don’t want to live.”

Aaron Butler, a 27-year-old member of the Special Forces, died in August as a result of an explosion in Afghanistan. His brother, Quinn, said army officers and other representatives of the government have sent letters to the family. None of the messages were from Trump, even though the slain soldier was one of the president’s fans.

The widow of Army Spc. Christopher Michael Harris, Brittany Harris, told PEOPLE that a scheduled phone call from Trump “fell through” at the last minute. While the president did write a letter to her, he did not show up at Dover Air Force base when her husband’s remains were returned to the United States. Vice President Mike Pence attended the somber ceremony for Christopher Harris and Army Sgt. Jonathon Hunter, who reportedly died in a suicide attack in Afghanistan three months ago.

Hunter’s widow, Whitney Hunter, told The Fayetteville Observer that Trump has not contacted her, either. She has gotten letters from federal lawmakers and state governors. She said that although a call from the president would not “mean a great deal” to her, “it felt … like the importance wasn’t as dire; like (Sgt. Hunter) wasn’t acknowledged.” She acknowledged that Trump’s silence “bothered me a little bit” because “he is the president.”
