Experts Suspect That Trump May Be Guilty Of Treason, Here's Why
President Trump is facing allegations of “treason” because of the connections his campaign and administration have had with Russia, Breitbart News reported.
The alt-right news site pointed out that Democrats and political pundits are making the charge primarily because of claims that the Trump team conspired with the Russian government to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 White House race. Last week, FBI Director James Comey told the House Intelligence Committee that agents are investigating whether such cooperation occurred.
Trump’s staffers should be “prosecuted for treason” if the allegation proves to be true, according to Robby Mook, Clinton’s former campaign manager. On Tuesday, Michael Winship wrote an op-ed for BillMoyers.com with the headline, “There’s a Smell of Treason in the Air.” He made the case that Comey’s testimony was “proof positive of the absolute need for both a special prosecutor and an independent, bipartisan commission with subpoena power to conduct a full investigation.” Winship compared the controversy with the Watergate scandal, which resulted in the resignation of President Richard Nixon in 1973.
Breitbart News also cited a story in The Washington Post in which Douglas Brinkley, a presidential historian, said: “There’s a smell of treason in the air. Imagine if J. Edgar Hoover or any other FBI director would have testified against a sitting president. It would have been a mind-boggling event.”
An opinion piece The New York Times published Thursday featured the same “smell of treason in the air” headline. Nicholas Kristof wrote: “I’ve been speaking to intelligence experts, Americans and foreigners alike, and they mostly (but not entirely) believe there was Trump-Russia cooperation of some kind. But this is uncertain; it’s prudent to note that James Clapper, the intelligence director under Barack Obama, said that as of January he had seen no evidence of collusion but that he favors an investigation to get to the bottom of it. … I was told, not by a Democrat, that there’s a persuasive piece of intelligence on ties between Russia and a member of the Trump team that isn’t yet public.”
Cloud of treason means we must have total shutdown of any @POTUS agenda item. No votes on any item. My stmt https://t.co/stvzhHfMZ6 #GetWoke
