Ex-Democratic Leader Rips Clinton Campaign: 'It Was A Cult'

Outsiders, including fellow Democrats, could not “penetrate” Hillary Clinton’s campaign, according to a former Democratic Party official.

Newsmax reported that Donna Brazile, who chaired the Democratic National Committee last year, made the allegation Wednesday morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” She accused Clinton’s aides of shutting out other Democrats. “I felt like it was a cult,” she said. “You could not penetrate them. I’m a grassroots organizer. I know street politics better than I know sweet politics. I know how to touch people where they live, work, pray and play.”

Brazile discussed her newly published book, in which she confirmed that the DNC conspired with Clinton operatives to derail Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bid for the party’s presidential nomination. She called the collusion a “blind agreement,” which first came to light in the summer of 2016 with the release of hacked emails from committee officials. Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned as DNC chairwoman as a result of her involvement in the agreement. U.S. intelligence agencies have accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of ordering the cyberattacks on the DNC and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

Brazile claimed that one of the reasons Clinton lost the election was that she did not campaign in Michigan, Wisconsin and other key states that Donald Trump won by narrow margins. The Republican nominee’s victories in the Rust Belt enabled him to secure the most electoral votes. Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million ballots. Brazile said another problem was the “arrogance” of the Democratic candidate’s staff.

However, the former DNC chief refuted MSNBC co-host Mika Brzezinski’s argument that Sanders would have captured the nomination if the DNC had not favored Clinton. “She won three out of the four contests,” Brazile noted. “I know the Democratic Party. She won three out of four. I think if the election went on and on, he would have caught up but I don’t know if he could have won.”

Brazile wrote that DNC and Clinton campaign officials signed their “joint fund-raising agreement” four months before the former secretary of state formally announced she was running for president. The pact allowed Clinton operatives to seize control of the committee’s finances, which meant other Democratic candidates could not access the funds, according to Brazile.

“I stand by what I wrote in the book,” she said. “On Aug. 19, the night that Donald Trump said ‘what the hell do you all have to lose?’ I was so angry. First of all, he was coming at the black folk. He was coming at the Democratic Party. And I wanted to fight back. All I could do was write a column. What the hell? I need to do more than write a column. I need to spend some money.”

Brazile recalled that on Sept. 7, 2016, when she informed Sanders that she had “found proof” of the conspiracy against him, she told him: “It’s a cancer.” She explained on “Morning Joe” that the situation upset her because she “had given so much of my life” to a party that she thought “was better than this.”
