Even Some Republicans Begin To Hint At Impeaching Trump For Russian Scandal

Democrats are not the only politicians on Capitol Hill suggesting that President Trump should face impeachment proceedings, according to The Hill.

The news site reported that some Republican lawmakers consider Trump’s recent firing of FBI Director James Comey the last straw in the growing Russian scandal. The president acknowledged in an NBC News interview that he dismissed Comey at least in part because of the bureau’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Agents also are looking into allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.

The controversy intensified this week when Comey claimed Trump had pressured him to end the FBI’s probe of former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s Russian connections. Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan told The New York Times on Wednesday that if Comey is telling the truth, impeachment would be appropriate, “but everybody gets a fair trial in this country.” When asked whether he trusted Trump or the former FBI director, the congressman replied: “I think it’s pretty clear I have more confidence in Director Comey.”

The Times reported that Comey wrote a memo following a meeting with the president in February. The note quoted Trump referring to Flynn when he said, “I hope you can let this go.” The former national security adviser lost his job following the revelation that he had conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the United States late last year. Flynn allegedly promised the envoy that the incoming administration would lift sanctions that former President Obama imposed on Russia in retaliation for the election tampering. According to several U.S. intelligence agencies, Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered cyber attacks on Democratic Party officials’ computers in an attempt to help Trump win the race. Flynn also has been accused of accepting payments from Russia, as well as compensation for services he provided to the government of Turkey.

Another GOP House member, North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones, has joined Amash in supporting Democrat-sponsored legislation calling for an independent commission to investigate the Russian affair. Jones told The Hill that Comey’s memo could lead to the impeachment of Trump. “I don’t know at this point,” he said. “I think legal scholars will probably start giving the justification of whether the House should or should not move forward on impeachment.”

Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida said Tuesday night on CNN that Trump’s actions are similar to those of previous presidents. He noted that “obstruction of justice in the case of Nixon, in the case of Clinton in the late ‘90s, has been considered an impeachable offense.” The congressman encouraged Comey to appear before House and Senate committees to describe his discussions with the president. “It may be something very serious; it may be nothing,” Curbelo sai
