Elite Golf Club Refuses To Hang Portrait Of Trump Over Fears Of Alienating Some Members

If you’re going to make decisions based on appeasing only some of your clientele, you shouldn’t be all that surprised when you face some backlash as a result of your decision. The Winged Foot Golf Club in Westchester, New York is coming to terms with that overwhelmingly simple concept, as the elite club has made a decision that has rankled some of its long-time members.

The members are especially put off because the club made the decision so that it didn’t raise the ire of some other members.

As the Daily Mail shares, the club has refused to hang up a portrait of President Donald Trump, who has been a member of the club himself for decades. Sources claim that a number of Republican members of the club would like to have Trump’s portrait hung at the club, but the management has dismissed the suggestion.

“Trump has been a member since 1969, and there is a big push to honor him at the club. We should be proud that the president of the United States is a member of Winged Foot,” the source said. “It seems the leaders of Winged Foot do not want to rock the boat and politicize the club, given that the US Open will be at Winged Foot in 2020.”

Even more curiously, it seems that the club is taking steps to distance itself from Trump entirely,

“Each member has a locker with their name on it, but Mr Trump's name has been mysteriously taken down," the source continued. “Some members are outraged because there seems to be no justification, apart from, perhaps, too many people were trying to take selfies at Trump's locker, or they simply don't want to advertise his membership.”

The pricey club charges as much as $200,000 in initiation fees, and quite a row has developed over the decisions by club management. While we can understand the desires of club management to have as drama-free an atmosphere as possible, it seems as if the decisions are only leading to drama in the first place.

We’re talking about the sitting President of the United States, who just so happens to be a member of the club. Doesn’t he deserve at least some kind of recognition?

Are there really members that would be so put off by recognition of Trump that they would leave the club altogether? Perhaps there are, but it’s unclear if any members have actually spoken out in opposition to a portrait. If the club was hoping to avoid driving a wedge between members, it has done the exact opposite.

Beyond the drama inside of the exclusive club, it further demonstrates how petty and childish the debate over Trump has become. If we flash back to the time that former President Barack Obama was in office, there were plenty of folks that weren’t particularly big fans, and there were also plenty of folks that thought he was great.

However, there was nowhere near this level of divisiveness that stemmed from whether or not folks liked the president. Folks are entitled to believe as they wish - but does there really need to be so much drama attached to those beliefs?
