Dr. Ben Carson Announces He is Running for President

Declaring that “it’s time for the people to rise up and take the government back,” Dr. Ben Carson announced Monday that he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2016.

He called on voters to “stop being loyal to a party or to a man and use your brain to think for yourself,” NBC News reported.

Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon who retired after 29 years at Johns Hopkins, held his announcement event in Detroit. He grew up there in poverty, with a single mother.

"We've gone far beyond what our Constitution describes, and we've begun to just allow it to expand based on what the political class wants because they want to increase their power and their dominion over the people," he said.

NBC News pointed out that Carson came under fire recently for suggesting that being gay is a choice. He told reporters: "I'm not politically correct and I'm probably never going to be politically correct because I'm not a politician, I don't want to be a politician. Politicians do what is politically expedient, and I want to do what's right."

While Carson trails a number of other Republican candidates in the polls, a recent survey by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal found that 41 percent of GOP voters are willing to consider supporting him.
