Is Donald Trump Turning Soft On Illegal Immigration?

Donald Trump may be backing down from his vow to deport all of the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants who are living illegally in the United States if he becomes president.

The Republican nominee has recently reached out to minorities and held campaign events in low-income communities, in an attempt to win over voters who traditionally back Democratic candidates. The Guardian noted Trump’s latest language is starkly different than his previous rhetoric bashing immigrants, Latinos, African Americans and others. In addition to the deportation pledge, the candidate has called for surveillance of U.S. mosques and the creation of a federal database to monitor Muslim Americans.

“The GOP is the party of Abraham Lincoln,” Trump declared Saturday night at an event in Fredericksburg, Va. “I want our party to be the home of the African American voter once again.” Just hours before the speech, he met with Latino activists. Some of those who attended the private session told Univision and BuzzFeed that the real-estate mogul suggested he might support proposals allowing undocumented immigrants to become U.S. citizens.

However, campaign spokesman Steven Cheung later stressed: “Trump said nothing today that he hasn’t said many times before, including in his convention speech – enforce our immigration laws, uphold the Constitution, and be fair and humane, while putting American workers first.”
