Donald Trump Says U.S. Foreign Policy Should Be Unpredictable

On Saturday, Donald Trump said that his foreign policy needs to be "unpredictable" in order to maintain leverage with other countries. In an interview with The New York Times he said, “I would use trade to negotiate. Would I go to war? Look, let me just tell you. There’s a question I wouldn’t want to answer. Because I don’t want to say I won’t or I will or – do you understand that, David?”

He continued to address Times reporter David Sanger by saying, “That’s the problem with our country. A politician would say, ‘Oh I would never go to war,’ or they’d say, ‘Oh I would go to war.’ I don’t want to say what I’d do because, again, we need unpredictability.”

Trump went on to say, “You know, if I win, I don’t want to be in a position where I’ve said I would or I wouldn’t. I don’t want them to know what I’m thinking. The problem we have is that, maybe because it’s a democracy and maybe because we have to be so open – maybe because you have to say what you have to say in order to get elected – who knows? But I wouldn’t want to say. I wouldn’t want them to know what my real thinking is.”

He was then asked if he agreed with President Obama's decision to end U.S. spying on German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Trump said: "You know, I’d rather not say that. I would like to see what they’re doing. Because you know, many countries, I can’t say Germany, but many countries are spying on us. Everything we do, we announce, instead of winning, and announcing when it’s all over. There’s such, total predictability of this country, and it’s one of the reasons we do so poorly."
