Donald Trump Calls For An Investigation Of Hillary Clinton’s Ties To Russia

President Trump argued Thursday that federal investigators looking into the Russian connections of his campaign associates should also be probing Hillary Clinton’s links to the longtime U.S. adversary, The Hill reported.

“Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russia are not looked at, but my non-dealings are,” the president asked on Twitter. “Crooked H destroyed phones w/ hammer, ‘bleached’ emails, & had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared & they talk about obstruction?” (He was referring to the FBI investigation of Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.) On March 20, Trump tweeted: “What about all of the contact with the Clinton campaign and the Russians? Also, is it true that the DNC would not let the FBI in to look?”

The president also has accused Bill Clinton of interfering in the bureau’s inquiry concerning his wife. The ex-president met briefly with then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch on an airport tarmac in Arizona. Trump, charging Lynch with trying to help the Democratic presidential nominee, said the attorney general made “law-enforcement decisions for political purposes.”

The Washington Examiner noted that Trump launched his Thursday Twitter storm just one day following a report by The Washington Post that Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating him for possible obstruction of justice. The issue is whether Trump unlawfully tried to stop the FBI’s probe of his campaign’s possible collusion with Russian operatives to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

The president has suggested that he fired FBI Director James Comey in an attempt to thwart the investigation. Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that in February, Trump asked him to end the bureau’s inquiry into the Russian connections of Michael Flynn, the former campaign adviser and national security adviser who had multiple contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the United States last year. The president also has been accused of pressuring intelligence officials to use their influence to discourage the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation.

Trump continues to deny that his campaign had any links to Russia, dismissing the investigation as a “witch hunt” and “fake news.”
He tweeted: “Why doesn’t Fake News talk about Podesta ties to Russia as covered by Fox News or money from Russia to Clinton - sale of Uranium?” The comment was a reference to former Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, whose emails were hacked during the race. According to several U.S. intelligence agencies, Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered the cyber attacks, as well as the hacking of the Democratic National Committee.

Deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders acknowledged that “some developments” in the Russian investigation sparked the president’s latest Twitter comments. The administration has argued that the “big story” is not Russian meddling in the election, but the alleged “unmasking and surveillance” of U.S. citizens by Lynch and other Obama administration officials.

Mueller is overseeing various federal probes of the Trump-Russia affair, which has been the subject of recent hearings by the House and Senate intelligence committees.
