Diner Owner Defends Yelling At Child

The owner of Marcy's Diner in Portland, Maine, recently yelled at a 2-year-old for crying in her restaurant but isn't apologizing because it got the toddler to be quiet. Darla Neugebauer is defending her actions against a backlash on social media from people who said they would never eat there again. Neugebauer said she grew tired of the child crying constantly for 40 minutes because her parents ordered her three, full-sized pancakes but placed it out of her reach.

Neugebauer said “I slammed my hands on the counter and I said "this needs to stop" - meaning her screaming - and I pointed at her and she looked at me and she stopped. And her parents said, "Are you screaming at a child?"'

Tara Carson, the child's mother said “My daughter was crying, it was nothing out of the norm and about 10 mins later the owner was behind the counter and yelling at my daughter and like screaming in her face "shut the hell up! I think I was just in shock because I've never seen behavior like this before and we're like "Are you really yelling at a child right now?" And she's like "Yes, I am. She needs to shut the hell up and go. And again, we were so stunned. I turned to my daughter and I was like "Listen, this is how we're raising you not to be as an adult. You will never be like this when you get older."

Mrs Carson also wrote a negative review about the meal on the Marcy's Diner Facebook page, saying it was the 'worst experience.' Neugebauer responded “You are lucky I didn't get really f****** nuts because being physical is not something I cower from.” Neugebauer insists she's not sorry by saying, "I might have used poor judgement. I wouldnt say I was sorry because it stopped. When things stop it's usually a good thing. Life's full of choices and you gotta live with all of them. I chose to yell at the kid. It made her shut up which made me happy, it made my staff happy, it made the other 75 people in the restaurant happy. And they left, they may never come back. Other people may not come back in. Their loss really.”
