Despite Legal Advice, Georgia Town Votes To Fly Christian Flag

In a battle to preserve Christian beliefs, the Cochran, Georgia City Council voted 5-1 to fly a Christian flag at city hall--right below the American flag.

City Councilman Gary Ates was the one who called for a vote to raise the flag, which is what he told 13 WMAZ.

Ates stated, "The city manager took the flag down because an attorney said we could have a problem. The people of Cochran came to a city council meeting and said, 'Let's put the flag back up.'" Ates believes around 50 to 75 people wanted the Christian flag raised, which he thought was "the right thing to do."

Cochran City Manager Richard Newbern said that while the flag has flown periodically, he thought seeking the city attorney's legal advice would be the right thing to do. Newbern stated that," Originally, the flag was raised for a "Bible Reading Marathon," a Christian event that the town initiated in 2003.
