Democrats Urge GOP Electors To Reject Trump

Two Democratic members of the Electoral College are trying to persuade Republican electors to vote for someone other than Donald Trump when the college convenes Dec. 19, according to The Atlantic.

Electors are staunch GOP and Democratic loyalists who traditionally cast their ballots for their parties’ presidential nominees. The Nov. 8 election determined the number of electors committed to each candidate, meaning Trump will win if all the Republican college members vote for him.

To keep the real-estate mogul out of the White House, Democratic electors Michael Baca of Colorado and Bret Chiafalo of Washington are encouraging Republican electors to support a “compromise” GOP candidate like Ohio Gov. John Kasich or 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Baca and Chiafalo are referring to themselves as the Hamilton Electors, a reference to Alexander Hamilton. In defending the Electoral College’s purpose, the founding father wrote: “The office of president will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.”

Chiafalo told The Atlantic: “We’re trying to be that ‘break in case of emergency’ fire hose that’s gotten dusty over the last 200 years. This is an emergency.” Baca said Republican electors should vote for someone who “actually knows what they’re doing.” The Democrats suggested that Trump did not receive a mandate from the electorate because he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.
