Democratic House Members To Skip Trump Inauguration

At least 19 Democratic members of Congress will not be in attendance when Donald Trump is sworn in as president on Friday, the Daily Mail reported.

The boycott movement began when Trump ridiculed Rep. John Lewis, who had told NBC News’ Chuck Todd: “'I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.” That prompted Trump to tweet: “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk - no action or results. Sad! … Congressman John Lewis should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities of the US. I can use all the help I can get!”

Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., fired back with a message that “when Donald Trump insults Rep. John Lewis, he insults America.” Three other Democratic lawmakers also rose to the defense of their colleague, who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil-rights movement in the 1960s.

In addition to Lewis and Clarke, those who have announced their intention to boycott the inauguration are Reps. Raul Grijalva of Arizona; Judy Chu, Mark DeSaulnier, Jared Huffman, Barbara Lee, Ted Lieu and Mark Takano of California; Luis Gutierrez of Illinois; John Conyers of Michigan; William Lacy Clay of Missouri; Katherine Clark of Massachusetts; Adriano Espaillat, Jerrold Nadler, Jose Serrano and Nydia Velazquez of New York; an Earl Blumenauer and Kurt Schrader of Oregon.
