Cruz Vows to Never Support ‘Legalization’ of Immigrants

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz laid out a firm stance on illegal immigration during the latest Republican presidential debate, pledging to oppose any legislation providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, according to The Hill.

“I have never supported legalization and I do not intend to support legalization,” Cruz declared when Florida Sen. Marco Rubio asked him to explain his position. The candidates argued about the issue several times in the debate, with Cruz pointing out that Rubio formerly supported legal status for undocumented immigrants who meet a list of requirements.

The senators are challenging Donald Trump’s lead in the race for the GOP nomination. Most recent national polls of likely Republican primary voters have shown them in second and third place among the party’s 13 White House hopefuls. However, Trump is far ahead with 41 percent support, according to one survey. Cruz is out-polling the real-estate developer in Iowa, the first state to vote in the nominating process on Feb. 1.

Cruz and Rubio represent competing factions of the party. The Texas senator appears to be the favorite of religious conservatives, many of whom have switched their allegiance from Ben Carson. The retired pediatric neurosurgeon has been fading in the polls, placing fourth just ahead of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
