Cruz Under Fire For Linking Democrats To Criminal Activity

Most U.S. criminals identify with the Democratic Party, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz suggested on Monday.

The Republican presidential candidate told right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt: “The simple and undeniable fact is the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats.”

According to Politico, Cruz cited the recent mass shooting at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado that resulted in three deaths. The accused gunman, Robert Lewis Dear, was jailed without bond on a murder charge. The suspect allegedly made a reference to “body parts” while being interrogated by police. That led some to theorize that he is a pro-life extremist who opposes Planned Parenthood because it provides abortions.

Cruz disputed the assumption. “This whole episode has really displayed the ugly underbelly of media,” he said. “Every time you have some sort of violent crime or mass killing, you can almost see the media salivating, hoping, hoping desperately that the murderer happens to be a Republican so they can use it to try to paint their political enemies.”

The senator went on to accuse the Democratic Party of pandering to criminals. “There’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime,” he said. “The Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.”

Cruz is one of the leading contenders for the Republican presidential nomination. He is competing for second place, behind Donald Trump, with Ben Carson and Marco Rubio.
