Cruz Trying To Distance Himself From 'Backbencher' Criticism

In an interview with Megyn Kelly on Fox News, Ted Cruz wanted viewers to understand that he is no Barack Obama.

Kelly asked Cruz what he had accomplished as a senator, Cruz said that what Republicans have done “over and over again is stopping bad things from happening.”He also said, “In my time in the Senate, there are a lot of faults I’ve had, but nobody would accuse me of being a backbencher. What I’ve tried to do is lead on the great challenges of the day, whether it’s stopping Obamacare or stopping the out-of-control debt, or stopping executive amnesty or defending our constitutional rights or standing with Israel, or stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons.”

On Monday, Rand Paul implied that he was a more electable candidate than Ted Cruz by saying, “Ted Cruz is a conservative. But it also goes to winnability. I guess what makes us different is probably our approach as to how we would make the party bigger. And I’m a big believer that you should stand on principle and be true to your principles, but I also think that we should take those principles and try to bring in new people with them.”

Kelly also asked Cruz, “Can you appeal beyond the conservative base?” She referenced a March 4 Wall Street Journal op-ed by Republican pollster Whit Ayres that said if Cruz received the same share of white and minority votes as George W. Bush did in 2004, that he would lose by a wide margin. Cruz noted his 2012 run for Senate by saying, “We brought together conservatives and libertarians and evangelicals and women and young people and Hispanics and Reagan Democrats."
