Cruz: Trump, GOP Congress Will ‘Drain The Swamp’

Ted Cruz, who competed with Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, on Wednesday morning called his former rival’s defeat of Hillary Clinton “an amazing victory for the American worker.”

"This was a change election," the Texas senator wrote on Facebook, according to The Hill. “Americans voted for Republicans because of a promise to go to Washington to reverse our current course, and end the Washington cartel — a promise to drain the swamp.”

Cruz argued that Trump’s win “affirms what we have long known, that Americans have resoundingly rejected the Obama-Clinton agenda of bigger government, intrusive regulation, executive overreach and lawlessness that is killing innovation and jobs.”

The Hill pointed out that Cruz did not endorse Trump after dropping out of the race, or even during his speech at the Republican National Convention in July. The senator finally announced his support of the party’s nominee less than two months ago. He campaigned on behalf of GOP vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence, and recently disclosed that he had cast his ballot for the Trump-Pence ticket.

Cruz vowed to urge the Senate to “pass the conservative agenda that President-elect Trump promised to the American people.” He cited the real-estate tycoon’s pledges to repeal Obamacare, reform immigration policies and destroy ISIS. The senator also said he is looking “forward to working with the new administration to confirm conservative justices from the strong list of 21 jurists that (Trump proposed).”
