Cruz Says Other Republican Candidates Are Too Moderate

Some of the Republicans running for president are just talking like conservatives to appeal to the party’s base, according to Ted Cruz.

Time reported that the Texas senator declared during the weekend at the right-wing RedState Gathering in Atlanta that he is the only true conservative in the race. He dismissed his rivals for the nomination as “campaign conservatives.”

“I’m pretty sure not a single person in the debate stood up and said, ‘I am an establishment, moderate, squish; I stand for nothing,'” Cruz said. “Have you noticed that they run as us? That’s how they run. By the way, they say if you’re actually us, then you’re unelectable.”

He added: “We’ve got to distinguish between campaign conservatives and who on the campaign trail suddenly discover they are the most conservative soul who has ever lived.”

According to Time, the crowd of about 1,000 Republican hardliners loudly cheered the senator “with multiple interruptions for raucous standing ovations and 'Ted, Ted, Ted’ chants.”

Cruz slammed his own party’s congressional leaders for “playing for the other side” by failing to stand up for conservative principles. He said GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner have joined Democrats in creating “one party, the party of Washington, the McConnell/Reid leadership.” That was a reference to Democratic Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate minority leader.
