Cruz Says He Is Signing Up For Obamacare

In an ironic twist of fate, GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz may soon be purchasing health insurance for his family through the Affordable Care Act--a law he has vowed to repeal.

In fact, it was Cruz's Senate filibuster against the law that led to a partial government shutdown in 2013. Right now, Cruz is shopping around for health insurance because his wife, Heidi Cruz, took unpaid leave from her job at the Houston office of Goldman Sachs when Cruz announced his presidential bid. Under an amendment to the law crafted by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the government can only offer members of Congress and their staff health care insurance that is sold through an exchange. In an interview with The Des Moines Register, Cruz said "We will presumably go on the exchange and sign up for health care, and we're in the process of transitioning over to do that."

In contrast, Cruz could go without insurance or his family could get coverage directly from an insurance company that would probably be at a much higher rate without the ability to get a contribution from his employer to help lower the costs of coverage. Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler said, "Let's let them make a decision on what coverage they'll get before we start speculating on every variable." Since 2013, Cruz has been a vocal critic of the law. When he kicked off his presidential campaign on Monday, he promised to dismantle the law. Cruz also told the Register, "I believe in 2017, a new president, a Republican president, will sign legislation repealing every word of it." Wednesday was the laws fifth anniversary.
