Cruz Rips Kaepernick, Other Athletes For ‘Insulting Our Flag’

Ted Cruz is ridiculing football and soccer players who refuse to stand for the national anthem as a protest against racism and police violence, CNN reported.

“To all the athletes who have made millions in America’s freedom: Stop insulting our flag, our nation, our heroes,” the Texas senator tweeted on Monday. Regarding basketball commentator Jalen Rose’s characterization of the players’ actions as “peaceful protests,” Cruz wrote: “Here’s a peaceful protest. Never buy another shoe, shirt or jersey of rich, spoiled athletes who dishonor our flag.”

Since San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt for the “Star-Spangled Banner” before a preseason game, members of several other football teams (and soccer star Megan Rapinoe) have also refused to stand.

Cruz’s Twitter attack was not the first time he has spoken out against the protests. Last week, at Reagan National Airport, he told a TMZ camera crew: “It’s sad when you see rich, spoiled athletes that don’t recognize what an incredible blessing this country is.”

At a recent press conference, the senator blasted the president for affirming Kaepernick’s “constitutional right” to protest. “I was disappointed to see President Obama stand with Kaepernick and say, ‘That’s right, disrespect the flag,’” Cruz told reporters. “That’s not the job of the president. The president should be standing up for America, and the president should be encouraging every American to honor the flag that so many have bled and died for.”
