Cruz Makes Nazi Reference to Blast Obama’s Gun Control Orders

Republican White House hopeful Ted Cruz, responding to President Obama’s executive orders on gun control, posted a provocative image on his campaign website Tuesday.

The ominous depiction of the president featured the phrase “Obama Wants Your Guns,” ThinkProgress reported. Those who clicked on the picture were taken to a donation link with a message from Cruz. “Today, we have government of the lobbyists, by the lobbyists, and for the lobbyists,” he wrote. “Now, the long knives are coming out because I dared to tell you and the rest of America the truth and expose what was really happening behind closed doors in Washington.”

The Texas senator was referring to the “night of the long knives,” a term describing when Adolf Hitler became the ruler of Germany. The splash page image of Obama’s face was photoshopped over a soldier wearing a military helmet and tactical jacket, according to ThinkProgress.

The news site pointed out that three months ago, Cruz made another Nazi comparison when he called the first Democratic presidential candidates’ debate “an audition for who would wear the jackboot most vigorously.” When he came under fire in 2013 for trying to block the passage of Obamacare, the senator argued that if his critics had been alive in Hitler’s time “they would have been saying ‘you cannot defeat the Germans.’”

Cruz accused Obama of “using the jackboot of authoritarianism” to take action against Cliven Bundy, who caused a confrontation with federal authorities at his Nevada ranch in 2014 when he refused to pay fees and fines for grazing his cows on public land.
