Cruz Hopes to Revive ‘Old Reagan Coalition’ in New Hampshire

Ted Cruz, coming off his big win in Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses Monday night, is now hoping to overcome Donald Trump’s large lead in the first primary state.

"What we saw last night was we saw that old Reagan coalition coming back together,” the Texas senator told the crowd at a rally Tuesday morning in New Hampshire. “We saw conservatives and evangelicals and Reagan Democrats standing together and saying, ‘What on Earth are we doing?’”

Politico noted that New Hampshire voters may not be as receptive to Cruz as Iowa Republicans, the majority of whom are religious conservatives. The candidate is hoping the momentum his campaign created in the caucuses will carry over to next Tuesday’s vote.

Referring to Reagan’s win in New Hampshire in 1980, Cruz declared: “The Granite State shocked this country.” Later in the rally, an audience member asked about Trump having ridiculed a disabled reporter. Cruz replied: “One of the greatest tests of character is how do you treat people you don’t have to be nice to; how do you treat the clerk at the convenience store; how do you treat the cab driver, people who you don’t have to be nice to, there’s no meaningful consequence in your life.”

The senator continued: “I can tell you, six weeks ago, Donald Trump was saying every day that I was his friend, that he loved me, that I was terrific that I was nice. And now I’m an anchor baby. I don’t really think six months ago, something profoundly changed about me. What did change is his numbers started going down and our numbers started surging.”
