Cruz To Democrats: You’re ‘Bat-Crap Crazy’

Sen. Ted Cruz, the conservative Texas Republican who ran for president last year, used some colorful language this week to describe Democrats.

According to The Hill, he called the Democratic base “bat-crap crazy” during an interview with right-wing radio talk-show host Mark Levin at the annual Conservative Action Political Conference in Maryland. “The anger on the left, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Cruz said. “They’re right now opposing everything. Democrats in the Senate are filibustering everything. … I think it is likely they will continue to oppose everything. The answer for us is they can’t shut down the Congress. They prevent us from doing anything, so we need to look at tools that can get things done despite a Democratic filibuster.”

The senator cited attempts by Senate Democrats to reject President Trump’s cabinet nominees. Some of the proposed department secretaries have been confirmed only because of Republicans’ 52-48 majority in the Senate. Betsy DeVos, the new chief of the Education Department, needed a tie-breaking vote by Vice President Mike Pence.

Cruz also accused Democrats of employing dubious tactics, like forcing the full Senate to vote on procedural matters. “Right now, Democratic senators are more scared of their base than they are of the voters,” the senator said. “A liberal Democrat told me a couple weeks ago, ‘Listen, we’re afraid of being primaried.’ The Democrats took as the lesson of this election that Hillary is too moderate. So their lesson is they need more Bernie Sanders, more Elizabeth Warrens; that’s where Senate Democrats are.” He was referring to the senators from Vermont and Massachusetts, who are at the vanguard of their party’s progressive wing.

Cruz has often been called “crazy,” as well, for his extreme views. He is a far-right politician who is popular with religious conservatives and the Tea Party movement. Other than his presidential bid, he is best known for temporarily shutting down the government with a long-winded filibuster in 2013.

The senator worked with his fellow Republicans to block most of former President Obama’s legislative priorities. However, he accused Democrats of being the most obstructionist party ever.
