Cruz: Black Lives Matter ‘Celebrates’ Cop Killings

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Wednesday accused the Black Lives Matter movement of encouraging attacks on police officers.

The liberal website ThinkProgress reported that the Texas senator while campaigning in Iowa, declared that the activists are “literally suggesting and embracing and celebrating the murder of police officers.” He added: “One of the most disturbing things is more than one of their protests have embraced rabid rhetoric, rabid anti-police language. That is disgraceful.”

Cruz also blamed the Obama administration for the increasing criticism that police officers face. “Of course black lives matter, and the consequence of President Obama and the attorney general’s vilification of law enforcement is many more black lives have been lost,” he said. “The best way to protect black lives is to keep them safe from murderers and criminals who would prey on them.”

The candidate claimed that attacks on police, and crime rates, in general, are on the rise. However, ThinkProgress cited government statistics indicating that the number of officer murders is declining.

One Black Lives Matter leader, DeRay McKesson, told the website: “Cruz aims to perpetuate lies about a movement focused on ending violence in order to garner attention. This desperate statement is another reminder that he is unfit to be the president of the United States.”
