Cruz Agrees With Trump: Do Surveillance at Mosques

Republican White House hopeful Ted Cruz said Tuesday that the surveillance of mosques in the United States is necessary to thwart terrorist plots, The Hill reported. He argued that civil liberties must take a back seat to safety, claiming “the Constitution is not a suicide pact, as the Supreme Court has said.”

“You can protect civil liberties, but there is ample authority if there is evidence that someone is planning a terrorist attack, that they are a jihadist,” Cruz explained in an interview on Sirius XM radio. The Texas senator, a Harvard Law School graduate who once worked as a clerk at the Supreme Court, alleged that Muslims could plot attacks in mosques just like others could meet in churches to plan crimes.

“The federal government can go and apprehend us in the church and they can monitor us if we are carrying out criminal conduct,” Cruz said. “And the way the Fourth Amendment works, the Bill of Rights work, is you have particularized evidence of criminal conduct and you target the terrorist and not the law-abiding citizens.”

Donald Trump, the front-running contender for the GOP presidential nomination, also has called for the surveillance of mosques. In addition, he favors the creation of a national database to track U.S. Muslims.
