Critics Say Obama’s Trip to Asia is an ‘Apology Tour’

President Obama is under fire from conservatives for his so-called “apology tour” of Vietnam and Japan, Aol.com reported.

The president was scheduled to speak in Hiroshima, Japan, the site of one of the two nuclear bombs that U.S. forces dropped on the Asian country near the end of World War II. “This guy’s middle name is ‘Apology,’ so when he goes there, people are going to perceive this as an apology,” Fox News commentator Jesse Watters said.

Aol.com noted that Obama’s critics began accusing him of being an apologist shortly after he took office in 2009, when he cited the “arrogance” of some past U.S. policies and military actions. Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, declared in a debate that year: “You said that America had been dismissive and derisive. You said that on occasion America had dictated to other nations.” Obama fired back, calling the allegation “the biggest whopper that’s been told during” his re-election bid.

Administration officials insisted that the president would not apologize to the Japanese. They said the goal of his trip was to forge better ties with governments in the region. Obama, who has stressed the need to expand trade opportunities and form military alliances in the Pacific Rim, sparked controversy this week when he revealed that the United States would end its embargo on selling weapons to Vietnam. He argued that the country needs help protecting itself from Russia and China.
