Country Star Sees Gun Control Differently After Vegas Massacre

The world woke up to some devastating news on Monday morning. There had been another incredibly senseless act of violence, and the number of dead and wounded people was staggering. While all mass shooting events are tough to process, it seems like they get more and more chilling with each one that happens. A lone gunman was able to inflict serious damage on a crowd of people that had simply gathered together to have a good time. Those folks' lives will never be the same, and the same can be said for people everywhere that are chilled to the bone right about now.

As the Huffington Post shares, Country guitarist Caleb Keeter was among the artists that had performed at the Route 91 Harvest festival. As you can imagine, he’s incredibly shaken up. He took to social media to place things in perspective, and also to share how his thoughts have changed in the wake of the massacre.

“I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd amendment my entire life. Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was. We actually have members of our crew with CHL licenses, and legal firearms on the bus. They were useless,” he wrote. “We couldn’t touch them for fear police might think that we were part of the massacre and shoot us. A small group (or one man) laid waste to a city with dedicated, fearless police officers desperately trying to help, because of access to an insane amount of firepower. Enough is enough.”

It’s impossible to imagine the terror that gripped the crowd as shots began to rain down. The shooter, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, was armed to the gills, and he had clearly planned things out to inflict as much damage as possible.

“Writing my parents and the love of my life a goodbye last night and a living will because I felt like I wasn’t going to live through the night was enough for me to realize that this is completely and totally out of hand,” Keeter continued. “These rounds were powerful enough that my crew guys just standing in a close proximity of a victim shot by this f***ing coward received shrapnel wounds.”

The traumatic events have led Keeter to do some soul-searching, and he sees at least one issue quite differently after the life-altering experience.

“We need gun control RIGHT. NOW. My biggest regret is that I stubbornly didn’t realize it until my brothers on the road and myself were threatened by it,” he added. “We are unbelievably fortunate to not be among the number of victims killed or seriously wounded by this maniac.”

Similar sentiments have been expressed elsewhere. It’s a perfectly understandable thought from those that lived through it, but the unfortunate reality is that there’s not too much that can be done when a madman gets something in their head. That said, we fail to see any reason why it makes sense to sell average citizens high-powered assault weaponry. There simply has to be a middle ground that doesn’t impede second amendment rights while instilling some common sense into the situation. There’s a time and a place for that debate to happen. For now, thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and survivors of this horrific tragedy.
