Conservative Commentator Celebrates End Of 'Clinton Dynasty'

The “Clinton dynasty” is over, Tucker Carlson proclaimed this week.

According to the Fox News commentator, a clear sign that the era has ended was Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s recent declaration that Bill Clinton should have resigned the presidency because of his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Gillibrand, a Democrat, holds Hillary Clinton’s former seat in the U.S. Senate. She has received campaign contributions from each of the Clintons.

The so-called “dynasty” began in 1992, when Bill Clinton defeated incumbent President George H.W. Bush. The former Arkansas governor won a second term in 1996. Hillary Clinton later became a two-term senator. After she lost the 2008 Democratic nomination battle, President Obama nominated her for secretary of state. Last year, Donald Trump scored an upset victory over Clinton, perhaps bringing her political career to a close. She insists that the 2016 campaign was her final bid for public office.

Carlson blasted Clinton “acolytes” for dismissing the former president’s misconduct. He expressed hope that attitudes are changing, as evidenced by Gillibrand’s comments. Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile, “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski and other liberals also have said recently that Bill Clinton should have resigned.

Chris Hahn, a guest on Carlson’s show who formerly served as a staffer for New York Sen. Charles Schumer, noted that someone other than a Clinton will be the Democratic Party’s leader in 2020. Fox News pointed out that Hahn is a longtime member of the Clinton camp.

Carlson recalled “the Clinton dynasty” by sharing with his viewers some old videos. One of the clips showed President Clinton’s infamous claim that he “did not have sexual relations with that woman,” a reference to Lewinsky. In another tape, Hillary Clinton described Trump supporters as “deplorables.”

However, conservatives might be premature in celebrating the Clintons’ political demise. The Financial Times reported earlier this year that the couple’s daughter, Chelsea, was not ruling out running for office someday. “There is no question they are returning to public life,” according to the newspaper. “That is what the Clintons do. They deny ambition, then reluctantly succumb to the duty of public service.”

Many Democrats consider the Clintons a liability. They believe that new leadership is required for the party to regain congressional majorities and recapture the White House. “A Clinton revival would make it harder to rebuild their party in the age of Trump,” the Financial Times reported. “Mrs. Clinton’s return would make it much easier for Mr. Trump to divert attention from the Russia scandals. Distrust of the Clintons is almost as widespread as it is for Mr Trump. … Then there is the damage to American democracy. It is easy to forget that last year’s election was expected to be a contest between Jeb Bush and Mrs. Clinton, the two leading political dynasties in the land. Now the Trump dynasty has taken over. The hit to the western democratic brand is hard to overstate.”

Since losing the 2016 presidential race, Hillary Clinton has turned down opportunities to run for mayor of New York City and governor of New York. She has been doing interviews and making speeches to promote her book about last year’s campaign.
