College Professor Defends Course That Claims US Is 'White Supremacist Society'

Are things really that bad across our nation when it comes to matters of racism? According to one course being offered by Florida Gulf Coast University sociology professor Dr. Ted Thornhill, the answer is an unequivocal yes. As the Daily Mail shares, the course is based on the premise that 'the U.S. has been and remains a white supremacist society.’

From the outside looking in, that premise appears to be both outlandish and inflammatory to many observers. As they see it, there has been an extraordinary amount of progress made in race relations through the years, and notions such as this one make it seem as if absolutely nothing of significance has occurred on that front. Thornhill doesn’t see it that way.

“Too many Americans, especially whites, are cocooned in a 'bubble of unreality' as it concerns racial matters,” he wrote. “I'm not teaching this course because white people get upset at me teaching this course, and I'm not teaching it because it makes them comfortable. I'm teaching it because it's an important topic that needs to be addressed.”

Ok, but isn’t the teaching of this course essentially lumping all white people into one gigantic basket and assuming they all see things the same way?

“Many whites have subscribed to and promoted racist ideologies, championed and/or enacted scores of racist laws, policies, practices, and traditions, and made incalculable decisions in their daily lives that have operated to maintain white racial domination over blacks and other people of color for hundreds of years,” he added.

That’s true, there are some folks out there with absolutely abhorrent views. But once again, does that mean everyone holds those views?

“Clearly, not all white people are racists; some are even anti-racist,” Thornhill acknowledges, but he caveats that by sharing his thought that all white people “derive, in some measure, material and psychological benefits by virtue of being racialized as white.”

Alright then. So what is the exact purpose of this course? That remains unclear.

“When you name 'whiteness' I think it disturbs them,” Thornhill said. “It shakes many white people at their core and requires them to question the assumptions they have about their life…”

While there’s no denying that racism still exists, the amount of attention that is paid to it would lead one to believe that we are still living under a time when slavery is considered to be acceptable and segregation is seen as perfectly normal. As we all know, those marks on our nation’s history have been dealt with. We can’t erase them away, nor can we force those that still harbor racist viewpoints to change their stance.

However, we can stop spending an inordinate amount of time providing attention to those that still hold those viewpoints. All that does is embolden them even more, and the fact remains that few folks would even know they exist if it wasn’t for those that continually call attention to them. Why can’t an educated man such as Thornhill recognize that fact and find a better way to connect with college students than by promoting themes of divisiveness?
