Clinton's Lengthy Post Just Before State Of The Union Backfires On Her

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an odd appeal to her fan base, at an odd time. Minutes before President Donald Trump's State of the Union Speech, the former presidential candidate posted a long essay outlining her reasons for not firing one of her senior aides after he was accused of sexual harassment.

She has been blasted for the content of the post, as well as for the time she chose to post it. Even many of Clinton's former supporters say that Washington's power couple is finished.

The post was in response to criticism she got for protecting her faith adviser, Burns Strider, during her 2008 presidential campaign. A credible accusation of sexual harassment was made against Strider by a staff member.

Clinton not only kept the accusation quiet, but she didn't fire Strider. He went on to get fired later, while working for a Clinton-supporting super PAC, for victimizing another woman.

“The most important work of my life has been to support and empower women,” Clinton began her post. “I’ve tried to do so here at home, around the world, and in the organizations I’ve run.”

She continued, “I started in my twenties, and four decades later I’m nowhere near being done. I’m proud that it’s the work I’m most associated with, and it remains what I’m most dedicated to.”

Even her staunches supporters are now beginning to question that narrative. Mrs. Clinton had always stuck up for her husband, former President Bill Clinton, when sexual harassment and assault accusations were leveled against him. She's always dismissed the women who accused him, claiming they're lying.

Most people accepted that. It wasn't a stranger or staffer; it was her husband, after all. How she dealt with her private relationships was her own business. Whether you saw her as a deceived wife duped by a lecherous husband who abused his power, or as a woman nobly standing by her man during adversity, it was acceptable that she defended her own spouse.

Many people even forgave Clinton for her close relationship with Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, a huge contributor to the Clinton Foundation and major Hillary supporter. They accepted that she didn’t know the extent of his inappropriate sexual behavior until the scandal broke.

But now, here are Clinton supporters, supporters of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement, faced with the cold hard fact that shows Mrs. Clinton was just giving lip service about being for women.

She wasn't just protecting her husband or struggling with the accusations as a wife; and she wasn’t in the dark about inappropriate behavior. She was one of the employers who let sexual harassment slide because it served her own best interest, even though her own advisers recommended she take more serious action against Strider.

She had the opportunity to stand up for women eight years ago, when she claimed to be a champion of women, and she failed.

Clinton also came under fire for the timing of the message. Some claim it was her attempt at her own little 'State of the Union' address. By the time Trump's speech was over, Clinton's post had already garnered thousands of comments.

The attempt to upstage the president was seen as a desperate attempt at Clinton to remain relevant.

"I’ve been given second chances and I have given them to others. I want to continue to believe in them. But sometimes they’re squandered," Clinton said in her post.
She may have squandered her last chance this time.
