Clinton Celebrates ‘Milestone’ After Tuesday’s Primaries

Hillary Clinton, celebrating her wins in several primaries on Tuesday, declared that she has won the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Hill pointed out that the former secretary of state has earned enough delegates to next month’s Democratic national convention to become the party’s standard-bearer in the general election in November. However, rival candidate Bernie Sanders is vowing to stay in the race, as he tries to persuade superdelegates to support his White House bid.

“It may be hard to see tonight, but we are all standing under a glass ceiling right now,” Clinton declared during her victory speech in Brooklyn. “But don’t worry; we’re not smashing this one. Thanks to you, we’ve reached a milestone: the first time in our nation’s history that a woman will be a major party’s nominee.”

She added: “So yes, there are still ceilings to break for women, men, for all of us, but don’t let anyone tell you that great things can’t happen in America. This campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings, no limits on any of us, and this is our moment to come together.”

Clinton defeated Sanders in primaries in California, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The Vermont senator finished first in North Dakota and Montana.

“I want to congratulate Senator Sanders for the extraordinary campaign he has run,” Clinton said. “He has spent his long career in public service fighting for progressive causes and principles, and he's excited millions of voters, especially young people.”
