Christie: Trump Needs To ‘Clear Up’ Charges Against Flynn And Russia

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Sunday called for the Trump administration to disclose whether National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had contacts with a Russian ambassador prior to the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration, Newsmax reported.

“Gen. Flynn … is saying he doesn’t remember whether he did or not. That’s a conversation he’s going to need to have with the president and vice president to clear that up so that the White House can make sure they’re completely accurate about what went on,” Christie said on CNN. He pointed out that it would be improper for an incoming government official to have discussions about sanctions with a foreign representative while another president is still in office.

“I’ve always been a person who believed that you have one president at a time, and that's the way things should be done,” the governor told CNN host Jake Tapper. The interviewer asked what will happen “if Gen. Flynn lied to the vice president” (about his links to Russia).

Christie replied: “Well, that would be up to the vice president and the president; and so I'm sure there'll be conversations between the vice president, the president and Gen. Flynn to make sure that everybody gets the accurate story on this matter — that it's cleared up. I think that's the obligation of Gen. Flynn as national security adviser to have those type of conversations with the president and vice president, and they'll act as they see fit, given all the circumstances.”

According to The Associated Press, an unidentified administration official claimed President Trump has “full confidence” in Flynn, even though the national security adviser has said he does not remember whether he talked with the ambassador about sanctions. Another White House source told the AP that Flynn and Pence met Friday morning, but no one disclosed the nature of their discussion.

When reporters asked Trump about a report by The Washington Post concerning the matter, he replied: “I don't know about it. I haven't seen it. What report is that?”
