Christie ‘Flat Out Lied’ About Bridge Scandal, Staffer Says

The scandal concerning the 2013 lane closures on the George Washington Bridge has resurfaced, forcing Gov. Chris Christie to repeat his claim that neither he nor his aides were involved, Politico reported.

The governor came under fire this week with the release of text messages that two of his staffers wrote during a press conference three months after the incident occurred. Christie told reporters that he could “say with certainty” that his campaign manager, Bill Stepien, and other associates were not responsible for the closures, which caused a historic traffic jam on the busy bridge. “Oh yeah. I’ve spoken to Mr. Stepien, who’s the person in charge of the campaign, and he has assured me the same thing.”

As the governor was issuing his denial, aide Christina Renna sent a text message to Peter Sheridan, a member of Christie’s re-election staff. “Are you listening?” she wrote. “He just flat out lied about senior staff and Stepien not being involved.” Sheridan replied: “I’m listening. ... Gov is doing fine. Holding his own up there.” Renna then texted: “Yes. But he lied. And if emails are found with the subpoena or (the campaign) emails are uncovered in discovery, if it comes to that it could be bad.”

According to The Associated Press, Christie declared Wednesday morning on a sports-talk radio show in New York: “I absolutely dispute it. It’s ridiculous. It’s nothing new. There’s nothing new to talk about.”

In a news release, Christie spokesman Brian Murray wrote: “The governor’s statements have been clear. Nothing contained in this text message changes that in any way. He stands by those statements completely and unequivocally.”
