Chris Christie: War On Drugs A Failure But Pot Should Not Be Legal

The so-called “war on drugs” has failed, but that doesn’t mean the recreational use of marijuana should be legalized, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Sunday.

The Republican, who is considering a presidential bid, agreed with likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton that too many nonviolent drug offenders are being imprisoned.

"What I've been saying in New Jersey is that we can no longer incarcerate our way out of this problem. We need to give treatment," Christie said on "Face The Nation" on CBS. "No other disease do we say to folks, 'no, no, no, you don't deserve treatment’; that somehow it's a moral failing. This is a disease like anything else. I think, quite frankly, the war on drugs has been a failure."

However, he called for renewed federal prosecutions in states that have legalized recreational pot, The Huffington Post reported. He called marijuana a “gateway drug.”

While U.S. law bans any use of the substance, many states have approved it for medicinal purposes. Residents of Colorado and Washington state voted for recreational pot. The Obama administration has at least temporarily stopped going after marijuana operations in those states. Christie pledged to reverse that policy if he is elected president.
