Cher Comes Under Fire For What She Said To Trump Supporter - Did She Go Too Far?

Things are getting heated between those who favor the dismantling of the DACA program and those who oppose it. We can count Cher as a key part of the opposition.

Cher found herself in a dispute on Twitter after offering “sanctuary” to a “DREAMer,” according to Fox News.

The singer, responding to the Trump administration’s plan to phase out the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration program, volunteered to provide space in her Los Angeles home for someone facing deportation. She encouraged others to follow her example.

“Those Who Can Must Take a DREAMER In2 Their Home & Protect Them‼ I’m Ready 2 Do This & Others in MY BUSINESS WILL DO THE SAME‼ SANCTUARY,” Cher tweeted. Twitter user Brenda Webb apparently did not believe the entertainer was being sincere. “Sure you will Cher,” Webb wrote. “I’ll believe it when I see it!” The Daily Mail reported that Cher fired back: “Then keep your eyes open bitch.” Webb replied: “I Sure will.”

The singer’s support of DACA is not the only example of her opposing President Trump’s agenda, having publicly criticized him several times. She backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign. Cher is one of many celebrities who have expressed outrage about the DACA decision. Others include Kerry Washington, Mark Ruffalo, Demi Lovato and America Ferrera, according to The Huffington Post.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that DACA would end in six months, giving Congress time to decide how to deal with the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants whose status is suddenly in jeopardy. Sessions argued that the program, which former President Obama established in 2012, is unconstitutional because Obama exceeded his authority in unilaterally changing the nation’s immigration policy. DACA has blocked the deportation of nearly 800,000 young people who were brought to the United States as children.

Trump said rescinding the initiative will be a “gradual process, not a sudden phase-out.” He explained: “Permits will not begin to expire for another six months, and will remain active for up to 24 months. Thus, in effect, I am not going to just cut DACA off, but rather provide a window of opportunity for Congress to finally act.” The president tweeted on Thursday: “For all of those (DACA) that are concerned about your status during the 6 month period, you have nothing to worry about. No action!” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi reportedly claimed she asked Trump to issue the tweet.

However, CBS News obtained a list of “talking points” from the White House that featured a much different message. It stated: “The Department of Homeland Security urges DACA recipients to use the time remaining on their work authorizations to prepare for and arrange their departure from the United States -- including proactively seeking travel documentation -- or apply for other immigration benefits for which they may be eligible.”

The statement contrasted with comments by Department of Homeland Security officials, who said they would continue to focus on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes. Trump made it even harder to figure out the government’s actual policy when he pledged to “revisit” his position on DACA if Congress does not resolve the issue within the six-month period.

During his campaign, Trump promised his supporters he would crack down on illegal immigration. He vowed to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, ban Muslims from entering the country, and deport all undocumented immigrants.
