Cheney: 'No Question' Russia Meddled In US Election, 'Could Be Considered An Act Of War'

Former Vice President Dick Cheney addressed the Economic Times' Global Business Summit on Monday in New Delhi. The former VP was concerned about allegations that Russia interfered with the 2016 U.S. election. He says Russia's interference is an example of the 'rising threats' to national security.

Cheney believes that Russia indeed played a role in thwarting the election for Hillary Clinton by releasing her damaging emails. “There's no question there was a very serious effort made by Mr. [Vladimir] Putin and his government, his organization, to interfere in major ways with our basic fundamental democratic processes,” Cheney explained.

According to Mr. Cheney, this is more serious business than many have admitted. "In some quarters, that would be considered an act of war. I think it's a kind of conduct and activity we will see going forward. We know he's attempted it previously in other states in the Baltics. I would not underestimate the weight, that we as Americans, assign to the Russian attempts to interfere with our internal political processes," he stated at the podium, according to NewsMax.

Cheney is one of the few Republicans in line with thinking that has mostly been expressed by Democratic lawmakers. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) said last week during a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russian interference in the election, "“I actually think that their engagement was an act of war, an act of hybrid warfare, and I think that's why the American people should be concerned about it.”

While President Donald Trump has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, and vowed to attempt to keep relations between Russia and the U.S. amicable, many fear that Trump is being (knowingly or unknowingly) used as a puppet by Putin. Cheney pointed out at the meeting that he believes Putin's motives are more troubling than the POTUS is admitting.

“He's now back in a very significant way in Syria and Iran, operating in ways that nobody, none of his predecessors have done in the last 40 years,” said Cheney.
