President Obama’s deal with Iran makes war in the Middle East more likely, according to former Vice President Dick Cheney.
“What Obama has done is in effect sanctioned the acquisition by Iran of nuclear capability,” he said Tuesday night on Fox News. “And it can be a few years down the road, it doesn't make any difference, it's a matter of months until we're going to see a situation where other people feel they have to defend themselves by acquiring their own capability.”
Cheney warned that the nuclear agreement will “put us closer to use, actual use, of nuclear weapons than we've been at any time since Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.”
The Hill noted that the former vice president is one of many Republicans who have come out against the deal, which calls for Iran to curtail its uranium-enrichment program in return for having sanctions and arms embargoes lifted.
Iran is required to allow international inspectors access to various sites and facilities. However, critics are concerned that Iranian officials could get as much as 24 days’ advance notice of the inspections. Cheney said that is “certainly” enough time for nuclear-related materials to be hidden. He told Fox News host Sean Hannity that the United States has “historically underestimated the nuclear efforts of others.”
