Catholic School Invokes Donald Trump and Receives Accusations of Racism

Andrean High School in Indiana is a private Catholic high school that has been accused of racism. At a game against Bishop Noll Institute, fans of the $8,600-a-year school showed up with placards showing Donald Trump's face. A majority of the players from Bishop Noll Institute are Latino. The fans started chanting, "Build a wall, build a wall."

In addition, they held up a sign saying "ESPN Deportes." Bishop Noll fans then shouted, "You're a Racist." Ashley Howard, a fan supporting her cousin who goes to Bishop Noll said, "I understand they're kids. You expect them to make mistakes. Maybe they didn't know how far to push the envelope because they are rival schools, but that's what the administration is for and that's where the administration is supposed to step in and say, 'hey kids, that's not ok.'"

In a Facebook post that has since been shared over 1,200 times, Howard also wrote:

"Tonight at the Bishop Noll vs. Andrean (both private catholic high schools) basketball game, the Andrean 'super fan' section repeatedly help up a sign that reads 'ESPN DEPORTES' and a fathead poster of Donald Trump. Bishop Noll's student body has a great majority of Latino students.

And due to the outrageous and racist remarks made in the media by Donald Trump the sign is extremely offensive (as it is meant to be).

I ask you….. What kind of administration allows its students to support HATE SPEECH and RACISM openly at a school sponsored event…….

A catholic school at that. The two school are always extremely competitive against each other, HOWEVER when do we as adults, teachers, parents, and principals teach the youth what is inappropriate.

Is the bible really the backbone of your catholic school when you allow more than unsportsmanlike behavior, you allow your students to taunt with racism. Like and share this post."

The players said they didn't hear the chants as they were focused on the game. Bishop Noll released a statement that read in part, "The accusations being leveled against Andrean are being taken very seriously by Bishop Noll Institute. This is a teachable moment for everyone about responsible speech, social media, and sportsmanship. Perhaps last night's incident was an unfortunate byproduct of irresponsible speech in today's political arena."

Bishop Noll (Hammond) beat Andrean 56-52 to win the Gary Diocese Catholic Cup.
