Carson Won’t ‘Cripple the Presidency’ By Taking Cabinet Post

A spokesman for Ben Carson announced Tuesday that the retired neurosurgeon will not become part of the cabinet in Donald Trump’s administration, according to Yahoo News.

Armstrong Williams, the doctor’s adviser and business manager, denied rumors that Carson was a candidate for secretary of either the Department of Education or the Department of Health and Human Services. Williams told The Hill that his friend plans to continue serving Trump as an unofficial adviser, a role he has held since endorsing the Republican presidential nominee. He also is a member of the president-elect’s transition team.

“Dr. Carson was never offered a specific position, but everything was open to him,” Williams said. “Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience. He’s never run a federal agency. The last thing he would want to do was take a position that could cripple the presidency.”

In a Facebook post, Carson explained: “My decision not to seek a cabinet position in the Trump administration has nothing to do with the complexity of the job as is being reported by some news outlets. I believe it is vitally important for the Trump administration to have many outspoken friends and advisers who are outside of the Washington bubble. It is vital to have independent voices of reason and reconciliation if our nation is to heal and regain its greatness. I will continue to work with the transition team and beyond as we build a dynamite executive branch of government.”

Carson, who was among 17 contenders for the Republican presidential nomination, led the race for a short period. When Trump pulled ahead, the doctor dropped out and endorsed his former rival.
