Carson Says Trump Was Not ‘Warned’ About Abortion Question

Ben Carson rose to Donald Trump’s defense Wednesday night, after the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination called for punishing women who have abortions, The Hill reported.

During an interview on MSNBC earlier in the evening, Trump declared that abortion should be illegal. When pressed by program host Chris Matthews to explain how he would enforce the ban, the billionaire businessman agreed there should be some sort of penalty. Trump later issued a statement clarifying that he believes abortion providers, not women, should face fines or jail time. He did not specify the punishment he would impose.

Carson, who recently dropped out of the GOP race and endorsed Trump, argued that Matthews’ questioning took the front-runner by surprise. “Well, bear in mind, I don’t believe that he was warned that that question was coming, and I don’t think he really had a chance to really think about it,” the retired pediatric brain surgeon said on CNN.

Carson continued: “That happens very frequently, and you know, what you develop with experience is how to answer that in a way that is not definitive. You know how politicians are. He hasn’t really learned that because he’s not a politician. He has now had time to come back and think about it, and to talk with his people about it, and come up with a more rational and informed type of answer.”
