Carson Optimistic About Scoring Upset in Iowa Caucuses

As Ben Carson entered the home stretch of campaigning in Iowa during the weekend, he predicted he would exceed expectations in the state’s caucuses.

“It’s going to be shock and awe,” the Republican candidate told The Hill. “The pundits will say, ‘How did we not see this? Are we losing control? What’s going on here?’ That’s certainly the indication I’m getting from talking to people.”

Despite never before having sought public office, Carson has consistently placed among the top five GOP contenders in the polls. Last fall, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon briefly competed with Donald Trump for the lead in the national race. He is competing with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and others for the support of religious conservatives, who make up a majority of Iowa Republican caucus-goers.

Recent fundraising reports indicate Carson has the resources necessary to continue campaigning even he fails to place high in Iowa. However, he acknowledged that finishing lower than third would be a problem. “We’re always in reassessment mode. We’re always looking at what percentage of the vote we’re getting, whether money is continuing to flow, whether our support base continues to be solid. All of those things have to be looked at beyond just a specific number,” he told The Hill.

The candidate added: “You always pray for wisdom. It’s a lot easier for me to do that than for these politicians. For a politician, (the race) is the culmination of everything they’ve been doing. It’s not like that for me at all.”
