Carson Lays Out Proposals to Fix Immigration System

The day before Iowans hold their presidential caucuses, Republican candidate Ben Carson unveiled a five-point plan to reform the nation’s immigration policies.

The former brain surgeon titled his set of proposals a “Prescription for a Sovereign America,” Breitbart News reported. He called for improving border enforcement, “implementing sensible admission and removal procedures,” solving “the large illegal immigrant population already here in the United States,” changing the rules for legal immigration, and “restoring the concept of the American melting pot.”

“We simply cannot afford to ignore our broken immigration system any longer,” Carson said. “Career politicians in Washington have opted to play games rather than solve the problems unregulated immigration has caused for the American people. As president, I will restore faith in America’s laws through fair and equal enforcement, while investing the resources and personnel necessary to protect and seal our border. Our founders sought a nation of immigrants and laws. I share their vision, and will return this country back to the hands of ‘We the People.’”

Breitbart noted that when Carson visited the Mexican border last year, he suggested that not enough was being done to prevent undocumented immigrants from crossing into the United States. “This is a nice small impediment that certainly wouldn’t keep anybody out,” he told reporters as he toured a section of fencing.

Immigration is a major issue for many Republican voters. Front-running candidate Donald Trump has called for deporting all of the estimated 12 million foreign-born people living illegally in the United States.
