Carson Defends Trump’s Criticism of the Clintons
Donald Trump’s strategy of attacking Hillary Clinton and her husband is just a normal part of politics, Ben Carson suggested Tuesday.
CNN’s Erin Burnett asked the former Republican presidential contender about the presumptive GOP nominee having called Bill Clinton “the worst abuser of women in the history of politics” and accusing his wife of enabling him.
Carson responded: “It probably is a part of who we have become as a nation. Would I love to see a situation where the candidates sat down and actually talked about the issues and about the ideas so that people could really make the right kind of decision not based on emotionalism? I would love that. I think we would all love that. But that’s not where we are as a nation.”
The retired pediatric brain surgeon explained: “We’re in what I call the ‘WWE Raw Stage,’ and if you don’t understand that you’re going to be at a disadvantage. I guarantee you that Hillary and her crew will be using it. So if Donald Trump sits back and says, ‘I’m going to be a nice guy,’ it probably will work to his disadvantage.”
Carson defended his former rival’s decision to solicit more campaign contributions from large donors. He claimed it is difficult for the billionaire businessman to be self-funding. “I know several people who are big real-estate developers and they have a lot of money. But it’s not liquid. It’s in building and properties, so it’s not that easy to liquidate all that and just put it into a campaign. If worse came to worst and he had to do that, I suspect he would, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be necessary,” Carson told Burnett.
